ENERCOM SUPPORTS TVA ENERGY AUDIT INITIATIVE WITH BIG RESULTS

Atlanta, Georgia - For three years, Enercom®, Inc. has provided TVA, its power distributors and their customers online home and business energy audit software. This year, TVA launched a major initiative to promote and reward customers that complete a do-it-yourself home energy audit. Each customer completing an audit receives a free energy efficiency kit. More details on this initiative and the kit can be found in the following TVA press release and via the links provided below. Though the initiative is still under way, results include more than 5,000 energy audits completed in one month alone. Enercom is supporting TVA by providing the online home energy audit software which is part of its Energy Depot® software suite. Additionally, Enercom customized the software to provide the special tracking and reporting requirements of the initiative.

TVA, Local Distributors Kick Off Valley-Wide Home Energy Audit Initiative

Participants To Save Power, Money with Free Energy Efficiency Kits

KNOXVILLE - TVA and local power distributors are kicking-off the New Year by mailing a free energy efficiency kit to every Valley consumer who completes a do-it-yourself Home Energy Audit beginning this month, while supplies last. The offer is part of TVA’s efforts to help educate the public about energy efficiency while providing tools consumers can use now to start saving energy, and money on electric bills.

"Using power more efficiently is an important part of meeting the Tennessee Valley’s future energy needs and reducing the growth in power demand in order to help keep electric rates affordable," said Dr. Joe Hoagland, TVA Vice President of Energy Efficiency and Demand Response. "These do-it-yourself audits are designed to help consumers learn how efficient their homes currently are, and what they can do to be more efficient. One month’s electric bill and about 20 minutes is all Valley residents will need to complete the audit and start saving money with their free energy efficiency kit."

This month, TVA set two all-time winter records for electricity consumption in the Valley. In August, TVA set 13 all-time summer records for power demand during the record-breaking heat wave. TVA’s highest periods of consumer power demand or "peak loads" have been growing nearly 2 percent a year. At its peak, TVA often pays four or five times its normal costs for additional power.

Residents can take the home energy audit by visiting energyright.com or by requesting a paper copy from their local power distributor. Consumers who complete the audit will receive a free home energy efficiency kit to help them get started, and a personalized energy profile report illustrating their home’s overall energy use and costs, as well as specific actions they can take to reduce energy bills now and in the future.

Consumers who use all the contents of the energy efficiency kits could see a significant savings on monthly power bills. Each kit includes a comprehensive "How to Save" brochure, two compact fluorescent light bulbs which use 75 percent less electricity and last 10 times longer than traditional light bulbs, as well as:

  • Filter Whistle - sounds when filter is 80 percent clogged and needs to be changed;
  • Outlet and Light Switch Gaskets - insulation to help stop drafts and save energy;
  • Faucet Aerators (two) - water saving filters improve efficiency;
  • Hot Water Temperature Card - measures temperature of hot tap water and indicates if thermostat adjustment is needed in order to save money and prevent water scalds; and
  • Energy Use Thermometer Gauge - helps check energy costs for heating and cooling; each degree thermostats are set back for eight hours a day, can reduce heating bills by as much as 3 percent, and up to 5 percent on cooling bills.

In accordance with its strategic plan, TVA will be working in the coming months with local power distributors and Valley stakeholders to develop new and expanded energy efficiency and demand reduction products, services and initiatives for consumers, business and industry.

Currently, TVA partners with power distributors to offer the energy right Program which is designed to help Tennessee Valley residents improve the energy-efficiency of their homes and businesses. Information on energy efficient technologies, cost-saving tips, an energy resource library, and do-it-yourself cost comparisons are available at www.energyright.com.
