Enercom's Online Water Audit Tool Helps Municipals Teach Customers How To Conserve Water

Atlanta, Georgia - According to the American Water Works Association (AWWA), North American households use about 70 gallons of water per person every day within the home. Where is all the water going? The AWWA cites the following top water users in the average home to be toilets (20 gallons of water per person per day), clothes washers (15 gallons), showers (13 gallons), faucets (11 gallons) and leaks (10 gallons). Add in outdoor watering and this figure can rise dramatically.

Seeing a need to help water utilities teach their customers about water conservation, Enercom, Inc. (www.enercomusa.com) developed a Web-based application called Water Depot®. “With a click of a mouse, customers can complete a home water profile of their indoor and outdoor water usage,” said Enercom President and CEO Paul Conlan. "The customer submits the completed profile to their water provider by clicking the send button. Within moments they get a personalized report that breaks out their total water use by category of use and cost. The report then provides specific recommendations for reducing their water use and costs.”

According to one municipal water provider, the online tool will play an integral role in helping it meet its water conservation efforts.

“Earlier this year storage levels in our local water reservoirs were lower than normal,” explained Kim Girling, product manager for Colorado Springs Utilities (www.csu.org). “To keep our customers informed about the situation, we post a great deal of customer-focused data on our Website. Customers visit the site to get updates on the city’s water supply, read water conservation tips and so forth. We are also promoting our HomeVantage® Water Efficiency Profile, which is the brand name we use for Enercom’s Water Depot application.”

Enercom, which recently completed development of an enhanced version of Water Depot, offers the online application to APPA members through Hometown Connections. Customized versions, such as the one created for CSU, are also available.
